More than 80% of truck traffic accidents are “car-to-car” accidents

More than 80% of truck traffic accidents in North Chungcheong Province last year were “car-to-car” accidents, the survey showed.

According to the Chungbuk branch of the Korea Highway Traffic Authority on the 22nd, a total of 1,225 truck accidents occurred in the province last year.

Of the total, 1,338 cases (84.7%) of “car loan” accidents accounted for the highest proportion. It was followed by 136 “cargo-to-person” accidents (11.1%) and 51 cases (4.2%) of truck-only accidents.

Forty-five people died in the accident during the same period. The fatality rate is 3.7 percent.

As for the cause of the accident, failure to drive safely, including negligence in front of the eyes, ranked first (691 cases, 57.2%). It was followed by 146 cases where safety distance was not secured.

Traffic violations (102 cases), central line violations (78 cases), intersection violations (62), straight right turn obstruction (56), lane violations (20 cases), and pedestrian protection obligations (19 cases) are also cited as major causes of accidents.

Looking at each day of the week, 223 accidents (18.2%) were concentrated on Thursday. On Saturdays and Sundays, when trucks were running less, there were 120 cases (9.8%) and 111 cases (9.1%), respectively, with fewer accidents compared to weekdays.

By time zone, accidents were frequent between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., classified as weekly. The number of weekly truck traffic accidents was 927 (75.7%).

An official from the Korea Highway Traffic Authority said, “Truck traffic accidents are on a steady decline in Chungcheongbuk-do, but the fatality rate is still higher than that of other models,” adding, “Drivers should drive with caution on days or times of the week when traffic accidents occur.”

There have been 5,322 truck traffic accidents in Chungbuk over the past four years (2018-2021).

By year, △ 1,440 cases in 2018 △ 1,381 cases in 2019 △ 1,276 cases in 2020 △ 1,225 cases in 2021.

On the other hand, the number of deaths is repeatedly increasing or decreasing to 62 in 2018, 34 in 2019, 40 in 2020, and 45 in 2021.
