LPGA Tour players wear commemorative ribbons for college golf teams killed in traffic accidents

Many of the players who participated in the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour JTBC Classic drew attention as they played with blue and red ribbons on their hats.

The players wore blue and red ribbons on their hats in the second round, following the first round on Saturday (Korea Standard Time).

This ribbon is to commemorate nine golfers from Southwest University of Texas who died in a traffic accident in Texas on the 15th.

Nine Southwest University golfers died after being hit by a pickup truck crossing the center line on the highway while traveling in a golf club van after the tournament.

Wearing a ribbon was suggested by Sarah Kellum, an employee of the LPGA Tour’s public relations team.

Kellum, a former golf player at the University of Northern Kentucky, said, “I used to ride a van when I was in college,” adding, “It’s a tragedy that anyone lost their life, but the death of a young man with a lot of potential is a big loss.”

Kellum made 230 blue and red ribbons, the colors of Southwest University, and volunteers made 70 more and distributed them to the players.

Most of the U.S. players on the LPGA Tour were willing to participate in Kellum’s proposal because they had memories of riding together in a van while working as college golf players.
