Improving traffic accidents.

Gyeonggi-do announced on the 21st that it will push for the “2022 Traffic Accidents Frequent Risk Area Improvement Project” for 21 cities and counties in the province this year to ensure traffic safety for residents.

The “traffic accident frequent risk area improvement project” is a policy to create a safe and comfortable road environment, and aims to prevent and reduce traffic accidents by establishing improvement measures for places where traffic accidents occur frequently.

The project is characterized by organic cooperation with various related agencies, including Gyeonggi-do, the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, the National Police Agency, the Korea Expressway Traffic Authority, and the relevant cities and counties.

The province, along with the Korea Highway Traffic Authority, closely analyzed traffic accident data over the past three years and selected this year’s project target sites, focusing on points in need of improvement and points with great improvement effects.

A total of 26 branches in 21 cities and counties have been designated, including Suwon Ingye Intersection, Guri Gyomun Intersection, Pocheon Eoryong 1st Intersection, and Gwangmyeong City Hall Intersection.

These target sites are areas of concern for traffic safety, such as points where the National Police Agency and the city and county are in urgent need of improvement, points where traffic accidents occur repeatedly, and points where traffic accidents are scheduled to decrease significantly when roads are improved.

To this end, the province plans to invest a total budget of 4.392 billion won in the project target site to adjust traffic islands, maintain crosswalks, and reinforce traffic safety signs and facilities along with the city and county.

It is expected that this project will provide a more comfortable and safe transportation environment to local residents when traffic maintenance at the target site is completed.

In fact, an analysis of the traffic accident frequent improvement project promoted in the province over the past three years (2017-2019) showed that the number of traffic accidents decreased by 31.8% and 33.6% compared to before the project was implemented.

In response, a Gyeonggi-do official said, “It is important to analyze the exact cause of the accident and take appropriate measures to improve the road traffic environment through facility maintenance to prevent traffic accidents.”
