Joint Prevention of Traffic Accidents for Children in Jeju’s Opening School…160 crackdowns

The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Police Agency announced on the 21st that it is carrying out complex traffic safety activities to prevent traffic accidents for children in the wake of the school opening season.

Focusing on the Jeju Self-Governing Police Committee, Jeju Island, the Administrative City, the Office of Education, the Autonomous Police Agency, the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, and the Road Traffic Authority, the Model Driver Association and the Green Mothers’ Association are conducting traffic guidance, crackdown, promotion, education, and facility improvement.

Earlier in January, an elementary school student A (8) died while riding a children’s school bus without a passenger, and in February, a middle school student B (13), who was crossing a crosswalk without traffic lights, was hit and killed by a vehicle.

Accordingly, under the auspices of the Jeju Self-Governing Police Commission, a working-level council of related agencies was held in January to promote a special inspection of children’s school buses for the first time in the country.

Separately, the Jeju National Police Agency is conducting intensive crackdowns on acts that threaten children’s safety from the 7th to the 31st of last month, including violations of children’s school bus operators and drivers, violations of special protection of children’s school buses, and violations of pedestrian protection.

46 elementary schools with high risk of accidents among 122 elementary school protection zones in the province are selected to conduct traffic safety guidance and traffic control activities on their way to school, and mobile patrols such as patrol cars and psycha are intensively cracked down.

In cooperation with the Autonomous Police Corps, the Office of Education, local governments, and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, 59 places, including elementary schools and academy areas in the province, are cracking down on children’s school bus operators and drivers from the 7th to the 31st of last month.

In order to operate a school bus for children under the age of 13, a certificate must be issued to the competent police station in accordance with Article 52 of the Road Traffic Act.
