Traffic accidents increase in April when highway repair work is heavy…”Driver needs to be careful”

In April, when the repair work of highway facilities is increasing, a number of workplace traffic accidents are reported, requiring special attention from drivers.

According to the Korea Expressway Corporation on the 8th, a total of 20 accidents occurred in April, killing two people, according to an analysis of monthly highway workshop accidents over the past five years (2017-2021).

Compared to the number of traffic accidents and deaths of 7 cases in January, 3 cases and 0 cases in February, and 16 cases and 0 deaths in March, respectively, the number of accidents has increased.

This was analyzed because the repair work of road facilities damaged by snow removal in winter will increase from April.

90% of traffic accidents occurring in highway workplaces are caused by lack of timely recognition of safety facilities such as work guide vehicles in front of them due to sleepiness and neglect.

The fatality rate (31%) is three times higher than that of ordinary traffic accidents (9.9%) because they collide without braking.

Drivers should decelerate to 60 kilometers per hour and change lanes in advance even if they cannot see the workplace immediately when driving on the highway.

In order to prevent accidents, the Korea Expressway Corporation guides the work lane, the distance required for the workplace, and the presence or absence of delays and congestion through road light signs, workplace caution signs, and work guide vehicles even before entering the workplace.

In addition, traffic cones (labacons), flashing arrow signs, and speed limit signs are installed to induce drivers to change and decelerate lanes.

A construction official said, “The repair work is to create a pleasant and safe road environment. For the safety of drivers and workers, please pay attention to the workshop information seen on the highway.”
