One logical effect of the corporate capitalists’ century-long cars-first transportation dictatorship in America has been the thorough intimidation of even its most ardent critics. With that in mind, see if you can guess what the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition agrees to call the reality depicted in this photograph:
To quote the SFBC:
According to a press release issued today by the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, “Responding to the growing interest in bicycle transportation, the city began installing its first physically separated bike lane on Market Street today.
“Physically separated”? From 3,000-pound rolling metal boxes? Seriously, SFBC? Looks like even the slightest, most feathery concessions can bowl you right over.
Meanwhile, the DoubleSpeak involved in U.S. transportation planning rolls merrily along, aided by even the would-be reformers.

1Hello, I ride my bicycle daily in San Francisco, and you are right-on in what you said in this post. The physically separated bike lane is poppycock. It is nothing but the original painted bike lane with plastic poles as barriers–I can bend them with hand! Also, there is often a motor vehicle riding or parked on it.
There is another section diagonally on the opposite side of the street, wherein the plastic poles have been inserted and the bike line has been re-striped and newly-positioned. This change has made it more dangerous for bicyclists, because now I have to cross over a lane of on-coming, fast moving automobiles in order to get into the bike lane. (If you do not live/bicycle in San Francisco, let me know if you would like me to send you some photos of the aforementioned hazard we bicyclists have been newly presented with.)

2It would be great to get more info on this, Rhonda! I live in Portland, Oregon, which is also a good bike town, but also enormously over-rated.
Please do send some photos. If you’d like to do a whole guest post, that we also be fantastic!
Solidarity!

3I live on what used to be a country road. 4 years ago, the city took some of my land to widen/smooth out my street, so that the drivers could speed more safely.
I tried my best to stop it. The concession they gave me was a “bike lane”, a painted stripe on the street.
I asked for a physical barrier, but they said it would interfere with street drainage. OK, I said, put an interrupted concrete barrier.
Ha, ha. After paying 4 million dollars for 2 miles of widened road, did I really think they would pay more to improve safety for frigging pedestrians and bicyclists? Fat chance!
